Microsoft takes down Siri with Cortana in its new Windows Phone 8.1 commercial

cortana vs. siri
Microsoft shows a simple Siri vs. Cortana in its latest Windows Phone 8.1 commercial.  It compares the iPhone 5S  with Siri and the Lumia 635 with Cortana and shows how Cortana is much more capable than Siri as Cortana handles reminders -both people based and location based -  and gives traffic updates while Siri stays behind unable to do such tasks.
The commercial ends with Siri admitting “Now, that’s a smartphone” . While it slightly looks odd while Microsoft tries to compare iPhone 5s with Lumia 635, Microsoft focuses on pitting Siri against Cortana. Enjoy the video!

Windows Phone 8.1 update 1 to include support for folders and interactive cases

Lumia 630
While the Windows Phone 8.1 is still to be rolled out to most of the Windows phone models around the world, it seems that Microsoft is already planning to release update 1 of the Windows Phone 8.1. While most of the features this update brings are said to be for the manufacturers, there are also few changes that could be to the consumer side.
One of those is the native folder support, the feature which already iOS and Android platforms have, which allows users to segregate different apps into a folder.
The other feature that this Update 1 of Windows Phone 8.1 brings to Windows Phone is the support for interactive cases. Interactive cases are those which allow phones to wake up when the case is opened or they are also used to display information when the case is closed (like the HTC dot view case).

Microsoft not allowing new Lumia users to set Google as default search engine

Microsoft not allowing new Lumia users to set Google as default search engine
For some of the new Lumia Phones, Microsoft has disabled the option of changing the default search engine to Google. On the majority of Lumia Windows Phones, there are two search engine options “Bing” and “Google” in the advanced settings of the Internet Explorer .
This option is now not found in the newly released handsets – the Lumia 630 and the Lumia 930. These are two Windows Phone devices that Microsoft released after its acquisition of Nokia. The search button on every Windows Phone always leads to Bing search by default. This is an option that no Windows Phone user can change. But older users of Lumia Windows Phones are provided with the flexibility of changing the default search engine to “Google” in the Internet Explorer of the Phone.

Official facebook app on Windows phone gets a new update

The official Facebook app for Windows Phone by Microsoft received an update one day ago. This update changes the version of the Facebook app from 8.1.5.9 to 8.1.6.0.
This update isn’t expected to bring any big changes. Only some small bug fixes are expected.
While the beta version of Facebook for Windows Phone 8.1 is still at version 8.1.4.25, the official app of Facebook for Windows phone is now at 8.1.6.0.
But reviews from many users with the updated Windows phone official Facebook app said that, after the update, Facebook on their Windows Phone keeps crashing very often. So that doesn’t seem appealing and so users will be looking forward to the next update from Microsoft for the official Facebook app to fix this.

restore windows phone
To know how to create a backup of the data in the Windows phone 8 or Windows phone 8.1, read this post:  Backup Windows phone
In this post, the way to restore the data that was taken backup into the Windows phone 8 or Windows phone 8.1 will be explained. If the back up of data is done into the cloud (as explained in the previous article) that is, into OneDrive of the Microsoft account that was added to the Windows phone primarily, then the restoration of data back into the phone from OneDrive will require an internet connection to the phone. If the data to be restored is large, then it can consume time. So it is wise to connect the phone to the internet using Wi-Fi rather using mobile internet data plan.

To restore data into Windows Phone :

How to set up Microsoft account on Windows Phone

Setup of email account in  any smartphone helps the user not only in receiving emails directly to his phone, but it also includes all the other features like calenders, contacts and other tasks from the user’s mail account to be accessed from the phone. In this article, we will see how to setup Microsoft account on Windows Phone.
windows phone microsoft account

Microsoft account:

The windows phone user can add other email accounts on his phone but primarily a Microsoft account is required because using only this account, the user can get apps from the Windows phone store, access  Xbox and Xbox music, etc. Most of the Windows phone benefits require a Microsoft account.  An email account used to access any of the following can be treated as a Microsoft account:
Outlook.com,
Skype,
Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 PC,
OneDrive (previously SkyDrive),
Xbox live or Xbox music,
Office 365.
If the user does not have a Microsoft account, he can create one during the initial set up of the phone. During the setup of the phone, if the user has not provided any Microsoft account to sync with the Windows phone, he may create it by going to the Microsoft sign-in website later and add it to the phone after the Windows phone setup is completed.
Section I: To create/add a Microsoft account during the setup of the phone:
1. While following the instructions of setup of the Windows Phone, “Keep your life in sync”screen will appear.
microsoft account for windows phone
2. Tap on Sign in if the user already has a Microsoft account, or otherwise, tap on Create one.
3. By following further instructions, the Microsoft account will be successfully added to the user’s Windows Phone.
Section II: To create a Microsoft account from the web:
If the user tapped on Sign in later  option during the setup of the phone, then he can create a Microsoft account later by going to the Microsoft Sign-in website.
microsoft signin website
(Click on the picture to have a better view)
Here, the procedure of creating a Microsoft account is similar to creating an email account in any of the email provider services. The user needs to enter his details like name, date of birth, gender, region and he would be asked to create a username and password for the Microsoft account that he wants to create.
To go to the Microsoft sign-in website, click here: Microsoft sign-in
After the Microsoft account is created successfully, the user has to follow the steps given in Section III below to sign-in into his windows phone using this account.
Section III: To add a Microsoft account after the Windows phone is setup:
After creating a Microsoft account successfully, then the user has to follow the steps given under to sync his windows phone with that Microsoft account.
1. Swipe the home screen to the left. In the menu that appears (this is called the App List), tap on  Settings -> Email+Accounts.
microsoft account for windows phone after setup
2. Tap on Add account -> Microsoft Account -> Sign in
3. Enter the email address and the  password of the Microsoft account and tap on Next.
4. If the user wishes to backup pictures, text messages, phone settings and app data into the Microsoft account provided, then tap on Yes.

NOTE:

  • Once a Microsoft account is used to sign-in into the Windows Phone, it cannot be changed unless the phone is reset.
  • After the user adds the Microsoft account to his windows phone, the email, contacts, calender, pictures, documents will be in sync with the phone.
  • If the user sets up any other Microsoft email accounts like hotmail.com, outlook.com on his Windows phone after adding a Microsoft account, the photos or email or any other data from those accounts will not be in sync with the windows phone.
So, if the user has more than one Microsoft account, it is important to chose which account among those should the user add to his Windows phone for the first time.
  • A tile with the email icon for this Microsoft account gets created on the Start screen of the phone. If this email account is not used by the user primarily, the tile can be removed from the Start screen.
Detailed steps on how to add email accounts from other email service providers to the Windows Phone is given in the next post : How to add email account in Windows Phone

Sometimes, when updating  Windows phone, users encounter some problems, like the  messages that pop up on the screen of Windows Phone while updating are called the error codes like 801881cd, 80188264, 80188265, 801882cb, 801881d0, 8018822a, 80072f30, 80072ee7, 80072ee2, 80072efd 80072f76, 80072efe,80188d1, 80188d2. Before proceeding with the troubleshooting of the problem, first go through the following tips to make the updating procedure easy:
  • If the phone says “Battery Low” during the installation of an update, connect the phone to the charger and do not disconnect it until the installation completes (wise idea is to have the phone fully charged before starting the installation of any update).
  • Most of the errors are temporary. By trying to install the update again, the error may not repeat itself.
  • Remove some of the apps or files which are not necessary, so that some space can be made available to the update when the phone memory seems to be occupied to a large extent.

Transfer contacts to Windows Phone

When a mobile phone user wants to shift  from any old phone to a new phone, the major priority is given to the transfer of contacts from the old phone to the new phone. In this post, it is discussed about how to transfer contacts to a Windows phone.
windows phone
If the old phone uses a SIM card which is the same type of Windows mobile, to store the contacts, then it can be inserted into the windows phone directly to import the contacts. If the old phone and the windows phone both require the same microSIM card, then there arises no problem in inserting the SIM. But if the phones differ in the sizes of SIM used, then the user have to contact a cell phone technician, to cut the big sized SIM card to micro SIM size, which will be done with the help of SIM cutter tool. This SIM resizing process has to be done in iPhone, Smart phones etc.. if the old SIM and new SIM are not in the same size. Although this SIM cutter tool is not costlier, it will not be in use regularly, Better get this work done by a cell phone technician.
When contacts are imported into the Windows phone from a SIM card, they are automatically updated to the user’s Microsoft account on the phone and they will not be deleted from the SIM card as well. If the Windows Phone user has not set up any Microsoft account yet, then the contacts will be saved to the phone’s memory. Later, when the user sets up a Microsoft account, then the contacts that are already saved in the phone memory will be automatically imported to the Microsoft account.
To import contacts from a SIM card:
